Sierra joined the family in August 2007 as a lively, energetic pup while I was pregnant with my fourth child. She slept in a crate in the bedroom for easy potty access and grew into a vocal dog with a gentle personality who clearly expressed her needs. About a year ago, at around 17½ years old, her right hind leg suddenly failed—likely due to intervertebral disc disease. An MRI was declined due to her age, and though vets recommended euthanasia, we refused. She received comfort medication instead. Sierra adapted impressively, scooting on three legs and giving up running or regular walks. Now 18 years and 9 months old, she still walks (not always straight), and just days ago playfully ran on the grass. Her hearing and vision remain good; dental issues mean soft food only, with no anesthesia for cleaning. She has occasional incontinence. Above all, Sierra remains comfortable, cherished, and full of love—adoring daily hugs and cuddles that bring daily joy to our family.
